2000年聯合國通過〈千禧年發展宣言〉（Millennium Declaration），隔年通過「千禧年發展目標」（Millennium Development Goals, MDGs），確立全球在2015年前應達成的8項目標。2015年9月25日，聯合國宣布永續發展目標（Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs），接替「千禧年發展目標」，並且以2016年為永續發展元年。SDGs一共有17項目標、169項標的與230個指標，這些目標、標的與指標也成為2030年前全球發展工作的最高綱領。
本校秉持全人教育的辦學理念，所訂定的7條教育理念，多與SDGs契合，特別是第1條「我們尊重自然與人性的尊嚴，尋求天人物我間的和諧，以智慧慎用科技與人文的專業知識，造福人群」完全融合了SDGs精神。在全人教育理念引導下，通識教育中心將通識課程劃分為「天學類」、「人學類」、「物學類」及「我學類」等4大學類。每學期開設超過150餘門課程，內容包含了SDGs訴求的經濟成長、環境保護與社會進步3大面向，並且完全融入SDGs的17項目標。簡言之，本校及通識教育中心追求的天人物我全人教育理念，含蓋了聯合國永續發展目標，與SDGs追求的全球發展精神毫無二致。
為了統合力量與集中資源實踐SDGs，通識教育中心在學校指導之下成立「永續發展學苑」，翼望透過通識課程、活動、研究等，在推動SDGs過程中善盡一己之力。同時藉由實現專門與通識的平衡、學識與人格的平衡、個人與群體的平衡及身、心、靈的平衡等4大平衡，促使全校師生將SDGs落實於生活之中，並以個人為起點，將SDGs推展到社會各個角落。
以「人文思想」賦予SDGs新的理解，以此建立中原通識教育中心獨樹一幟的全人教育SDGs。
(1)天、人：基督福音、世界關懷
論述：基督信仰是立身處世的根本，同時也是普世價值的追求，SDGs中，屬普世價值有：1消除貧窮、2終止飢餓、16和平、正義與健全司法、17友善夥伴關係
(2)人、物：厚德載物、經世致用
論述：物質環境、基礎建設等等應受人的道德、倫理駕御，個人的善集成社會集體的善，SDGs中合於此項關懷的是：6清潔飲水和衛生設施、7經濟適用的清潔能源、8體面工作和經濟成長、9產業、創新和基礎設定、11永續發展的市鎮規劃
(3)物、我：樂善好施、視人如己
論述：節制慾望、降低物質需求，秉持自我管理、理性行事以應對現代複雜、多變的歧見、偏見，同時改變階級、財富、種族所產生的不平等，SDGs中合於此項關懷的是：3良好健康與社會福利、4、優質教育、5性別平等、10減少國內及國家間不平等
(4)天、我：謙卑敬謹、真善美聖
論述：個人應敬愛上帝，擴及孕育哺養個人生命的自然。打破人定勝天思維，代之以化育萬物、永續環境、子孫綿延使命感，謙卑自處。SDGs中合於此項關懷的是：12確保永續消費和生產模式、13氣候行動、14保育及維護海洋資源、15保育及維護陸上生態
什麼是SDGs About SDGs
聯合國永續發展目標(SDGs)定義 Sustainable Development Goals definition
目標1. 消除貧窮：消除各地一切形式的貧窮。
No Poverty：End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
目標2. 消除飢餓：消除飢餓，達成糧食安全，改善營養及促進永續農業。
Zero Hunger：End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture.
目標3. 良好健康與福祉：確保健康及促進各年齡層的福祉。
Good Health And Well-Being：Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
目標4. 優質教育：確保有教無類、公平以及高品質的教育，及提倡終身學習。
Quality Education：Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
目標5. 性別平等：實現性別平等，並賦予婦女權力。
Gender Equality：Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls.
目標6. 潔淨飲水與衛生：確保所有人都能享有水及衛生及其永續管理。
Clean Water And Sanitation：Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
目標7. 乾淨能源：確保所有的人都可取得負擔得起、可靠的、永續的，及現代的能源。
Affordable And Clean Energy：Ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.
目標8. 全人職場及經濟成長：促進包容且永續的經濟成長，達到全面且有生產力的就業，讓每一個人都有一份好工作。
Decent Work And Economic Growth：Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.
目標9. 產業創新與基礎建設：建立具有韌性的基礎建設，促進包容且永續的工業，並加速創新。
Industry, Innovation And Infrastructure：Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
目標10. 促進均等：減少國內及國家間不平等。
Reduce Inequalities：Reduce inequality within and among countries.
目標11. 永續城市與社區：促使城市與人類居住具包容、安全、韌性及永續性。
Sustainable Cities And Communities：Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
目標12. 負責任的消費與生產：確保永續消費及生產模式。

目標13. 氣候行動：採取緊急措施以因應氣候變遷及其影響。

目標14. 海洋生態：保育及永續利用海洋與海洋資源，以確保永續發展。

目標15. 陸域生態：保護、維護及促進領地生態系統的永續使用，永續的管理森
Life On Land：Protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, and halt and reverse land degradation and halt biodiversity loss.
目標16. 和平正義與健全制度：促進和平且包容的社會，以落實永續發展；提供司法管道給所有人；在所有階層建立有效的、負責的且包容的制度。
